Jesus and the surrogate family of God
Ross Saunders
Zadok Paper S89, 1997
In this informative paper Ross Saunders describes the life and structure of the family as it functioned throughout the Mediterranean region during New Testament times. An understanding of the roles and expectations placed upon the various members of the family during Jesus' time reveals the radical nature of his teachings and the transforming notion of the household of God. The strongly patriarchal and hierarchical nature of the family contrasted with the values of the kingdom revealed by Jesus. The surrogate family of God which Jesus instigated recognised God's authority, was non-hierarchical, defied social status, accepted children and affirmed women and men as equal partners. Many New Testament passages come to life in a fresh way as the social assumptions and practices of the times are described. While the intention of this paper is not to directly apply Jesus' model to contemporary questions, readers will undoubtedly find this material very relevant and will draw their own conclusions.
